The Detroit Tigers agreed to terms Thursday on a two-year deal with
right-handed reliever Jose Valverde, according to Yahoo! Sports Tim Brown.
The signing -- still pending a physical -- is worth $14 million for two
years and includes a $9 million option year.
Valverde, a Type A free agent, will cost the Tigers their first-round selection
in this June's First-Year Player Draft.
The 30-year-old right-handed hurler led the National League in saves in 2007
and 2008 and is expected to take over the Tigers’ closer role.
He was 4-2 with a 2.33 ERA last season and converted 25 saves for the Houston
Astros last season.
The Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals also expressed interest in
Valverde, who earned an $8 million salary last year.
The Astros will receive the Tigers’ 19th overall pick in the 2010 draft and
a pick between the first and second rounds (34th overall).
