Several national media outlets reported that the Lakers have joined the Knicks and Bulls as serious contenders for the seven-time All-Star's services. While the negative view of that development would be more competition, a best-case scenario would be that Anthony is trying to create leverage to force the Knicks into sign-and-trade talks with the Bulls. Multiple outlets, including the Tribune, have reported that Knicks President Phil Jackson has refused to consider taking the expiring $16.8 million contract of Carlos Boozer should Anthony pick the Bulls and try to engage the Knicks in sign-and-trade talks. But the presence of a third team could facilitate the process, particularly because the Lakers are rumored to have interest in Boozer should the Bulls use the amnesty provision on him. "There are a lot of ways to get this deal done," said someone familiar with the Bulls' pitch to Anthony. The Tribune reported last week that the Bulls didn't discuss money much with Anthony in their Tuesday pitch but displayed a confidence they could make the financials work. And this was with Taj Gibson, whom both the Bulls and Anthony want to keep, as part of the pitch. The Lakers and Knicks can offer Anthony a maximum contract, though the Knicks' offer would be richer by virtue of a fifth year only they can offer. The Bulls would have to gut their team for maximum salary-cap space, which is why a sign-and-trade represents their best chance to land Anthony. The uncertain futures of Anthony and LeBron James have the majority of the free-agent market on hold. The Bulls remain in contact with multiple player representatives, including those of Pau Gasol after they met face-to-face with him Thursday in Los Angeles. Former Bull Luol Deng is the most-sought small forward after James and Anthony, and he met with Heat President Pat Riley on Saturday in Chicago. Deng also is drawing serious interest from the Mavericks, Hawks and Lakers. After turning down a three-year, $30 million offer from the Bulls before they traded him to the Cavaliers in January, Deng is looking to meet or top that annual salary. Anthony is expected to finalize his decision by the end of the weekend.
