Bulls may consider trading top pick for Harrington
The Bulls and Indiana Pacers have discussed a trade sending Al Harrington
and the No. 29 pick in the June 24 draft to the Bulls for the No. 3 pick
and a player, possibly Scottie Pippen, according to a league source.
Talks are still in the early stages as both teams gauge the market.
Harrington is a 6-9, 250-pound small forward who averaged 13.3 points
and 6.4 rebounds this season, finishing second to Dallas' Antawn Jamision
for the Sixth Man of the Year award. But Harrington no longer wants to
come off the bench, and the Pacers have indicated a willingness to move him.
Harrington is considered a bargain with two years and $13.3 million left on
his contract. He's a perfect fit for the type of player Bulls operations
chief John Paxson has targeted for the offseason.
NOTES: It appears the strange saga of Bulls second-round pick Mario Austin
is nearing a conclusion as Austin is close to reaching a buyout of his
contract with Russia's CSKA team. The buyout could be completed as soon as
today, and Austin would then join the Bulls for summer-league action.
The Bulls own the rights to Austin for next season, but it's possible
he'll be dangled in trade talks.
*Unprotected lists are due today for the June 22 expansion draft for the
Charlotte Bobcats, but it should be anticlimactic for the Bulls. The Bobcats
aren't expected to take any of the available Bulls, whose list of
unprotected players consists of Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams, Eddie Robinson
, Scottie Pippen, Marcus Fizer and Ronald Dupree. Dupree might be the most
likely to go because he's inexpensive. And the $3 million the Bulls will
offer Charlotte to take Robinson's contract isn't expected to make a difference.
*The Bulls worked Latvian forward Andris Biedrins and Russian forward Viktor
Khryapa on Thursday.
*Minnesota's 6-8, 240-pound forward Kris Humphries will work out for the
Bulls on Tuesday, along with Nevada's Kirk Snyder, Stanford's Josh Childress,
Wisconsin's Devin Harris and Connecticut's Ben Gordon. Duke's Luol Deng also
is a possibility.
