EUROPEAN DELIGHT FOR SOLANKE AND BROWN
21.05.2014
Chelsea duo Dominic Solanke and Isaiah Brown experienced joy on the
international stage as England won the Under-17 European Championships in
dramatic fashion.
After the final against Netherlands had ended 1-1, the match, which was
held in Malta, was decided by a penalty shoot-out with England winning
4-1.
The achievement caps a remarkable few weeks for the pair, who were also
part of the Chelsea Under-18 team which lifted the FA Youth Cup.
Both players completed the full 80 minutes, and Brown had gone close very
early on when his low drive was well saved by Netherlands goalkeeper
Yanick van Osch.
Solanke continued his impressive run of form by giving the Three Lions the
lead after 25 minutes when he reacted quickest to divert a Taylor Moore
shot into the back of the net, the 16-year-old's fourth goal in the
competition.
Netherlands drew level just before the break, however, when Jari
Schuurman's strike deflected off the leg of defender Joe Gomez and crept
in at the near post. Solanke and Schuurman ended as joint topscorers in
the finals.
There was little to choose between the sides during the second half,
although Netherlands were certainly seeing more of the ball.
Chances were passed up at both ends, with Ryan Ledson going close for
England after being teed up by Brown, but with no extra-time being
played, the destination of the trophy would be decided by penalties, and
it was England who came out on top.
Ledson, Moore, Callum Cooke and Jonjoe Kenny all tucked their kicks away,
with only Schuurman scoring for Netherlands.
There were jubilant scenes among the England players as captain Ledson
lifted the trophy and, in truth, it was no more than John Peacock's side
deserved following an impressive campaign.
They emulate the England team of 2010 who also won the competition.
Elsewhere, Demba Ba started for Senegal and Bertrand Traore for Burkina
Faso who were the home team in a friendly international between the two
African sides. It ended 1-1.
Christian Cuevas was part of the Chile Under-21 side who were beaten 3-0
by France in their opening game at the Toulon Tournament.
Cuevas, who finished the season on loan at FC Eindhoven, played the
opening 40 minutes before being withdrawn.
Tomorrow sees Brazil take on South Korea while England play Qatar. Lucas
Piazon, Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah will all hope to be involved
for their respective nations.
Meanwhile, two other Chelsea players have been involved in internationals
across the younger age groups over the course of the past week.
Last Wednesday, Milan Lalkovic played the second half as Slovakia
Under-21s beat Czech Republic 3-1.
Charly Musonda opened the scoring for Belgium Under-19s last night as they
drew 1-1 with Mexico.

WINNING STARTS AT TOULON FOR ENGLAND AND BRAZIL
Posted on: Thu 22 May 2014
An England Under-21 side featuring Josh McEachran got their Toulon
Tournament campaign underway with a comfortable 3-0 win over Qatar.
Jordan Obita, Jake Forster-Caskey and Jordan Cousins scored the goals for
Gareth Southgate's side, who controlled the game for long spells and never
looked in any danger.
The Three Lions took the lead on the half-hour mark through Reading's
Obita, who produced a lovely, low finish to break the deadlock.
McEachran, who started the match, almost extended their lead shortly after
but his goal-bound strike was headed off the line. The Chelsea midfielder
then saw another strike well saved by the goalkeeper low down to his left.
Nine minutes into the second half, however, it was 2-0 thanks to a
stunning effort from Brighton's Jake Forster-Caskey.
As the hour mark approached McEachran, who can be satisfied with his
display, was replaced by Jordan Cousins, who put the seal on the win with
virtually the last kick of the match.
Nathaniel Chalobah was an unused substitute.
The earlier game in Group B saw Brazil beat South Korea 2-0.
Chelsea's Lucas Piazon came off the bench for the final eight minutes,
with the game already won, replacing Alisson.
A goal in each half, from Thalles and Luan, had put the reigning champions
in control of the contest, but it's England who top the group on goal
difference after the first round of fixtures.
The South American side are next in action on Saturday when they take on
Colombia, while England's next game is against Brazil on Monday night.
Elsewhere, it was a disappointing evening for Andreas Christensen as his
Denmark Under-21 side were beaten 2-0 in a home friendly by Switzerland.
The Chelsea defender, 18, played the full 90 minutes for the hosts as they
suffered a first defeat under manager Jess Thorup.

INTERNATIONALS: BAKER SCORES IN EASY ENGLAND WIN
Posted on: 24.05.2014
Lewis Baker was on target as England Under-19s got their Elite Round of
qualification for the European Championships off to the perfect start with
a 6-0 win against Montenegro at Walsall.
Noel Blake's side were in control of the contest throughout as they bid to
secure a place in the Hungary finals in July.
Jordon Ibe was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick for the Three
Lions but Baker, who netted the winner as Chelsea won the Under-21 Premier
League crown earlier this month, also got his name on the scoresheet.
John Swift and Ola Aina, along with Baker, started for England, and it was
Baker who made it 2-0 from the penalty spot early in the second half after
Ibe had broken the deadlock before the break.
Ibe added two more to make it 4-0, before Sam Gallagher and Callum
Robinson completed the scoring for the hosts. Swift had been replaced just
after the hour while Ruben Loftus-Cheek was an unused substitute.
Isak Sswankambo, meanwhile, played the full 90 minutes as Sweden Under-19s
were beaten 2-1 at home by Bulgaria.
Yesterday, Christian Cuevas was a half-time substitute for Chile as they
were beaten 3-1 at the Toulon Tournament.
Cuevas, who came on for Sebastian Martinez at the break, spent the second
half of the season on loan at FC Eindhoven, and he was unable to prevent
his side from slipping to a second consecutive defeat in the competition.
Lucas Piazon, meanwhile, was an unused substitute in Brazil's 2-1 win over
Colombia. They play England on Monday.

HEARTBREAK FOR YOUNG ENGLAND QUARTET
Posted on: Fri 30 May 2014
Lewis Baker, John Swift, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ola Aina all started for
England's Under-19 side in a dramatic 1-0 loss to Ukraine which ended
their hopes of qualifying for the European Championships in July.
Needing just a draw to guarantee their qualification for the tournament in
Hungary, the young England side conceded an injury-time own goal at the
Pirelli Stadium in Burton. The result means their visitors Ukraine finish
top of Group 1 in the Elite Round of qualifying.
Noel Blake included four Chelsea youngsters in his starting 11. Ola Aina
began at right-back while the trio of Lewis Baker, John Swift and Ruben
Loftus-Cheek all started in a three-man midfield. Loftus-Cheek was
replaced with five minutes remaining.
Baker scored the two goals against Scotland on Monday which had left
England in the driving seat for qualification, and it was he who went
closest to scoring today (Thursday). After Ukraine had taken the lead,
deep into injury time, our midfielder hit the post from a free-kick, only
extending England's agony on an afternoon when chances frequently came and
went. Aina also saw a second-half strike not miss by much, before the
unfortunate Calum Chambers could only deflect the ball into his own net in
added time.
Elsewhere, Isak Ssewankambo played the full 90 minutes of Sweden's
comfortable 3-0 win over the Czech Republic, also in the Elite Round of
qualifying for the Under-19 European Championships. However, with Bulgaria
securing a point against Italy, the Swedes, like England, finished second
in their group and will therefore also not be featuring at the Finals in
July.
On Wednesday, Charly Musonda played the first 45 minutes of Belgium
Under-19's 1-1 draw with Wales, also in the Elite Round of qualifying.
They play Greece on Friday.

INTERNATIONALS: CAHILL AND TORRES SCORE IN FRIENDLY WINS
Posted on: Fri 30 May 2014
Both Gary Cahill and Fernando Torres scored as preparations for the World
Cup continue.
Cahill scored for England in their final friendly on home soil before this
summer's showpiece in Brazil. It is his second international goal, and his
first at Wembley.
Our defender expertly headed home Leighton Baines's second-half corner to
double England's advantage against Peru. Daniel Sturridge had opened the
scoring in the first half with a curled shot from outside the box.
The victory was completed by Cahill's centre-back partner, Phil Jagielka,
who slotted home from another corner after Cahill had put pressure on the
Peru goalkeeper.
Frank Lampard was an unused substitute. England travel to America to
complete their preparation for this summer's showpiece, which includes
friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras, before their first game against
Italy on 14 June.
Dominic Solanke and Izzy Brown, members of England's Under-17 European
Championship-winning squad, paraded that trophy around Wembley with their
team-mates at half-time.
Spain's friendly with Bolivia in Seville was goalless until Fernando
Torres converted a penalty, straight down the middle, awarded for a foul
on Javi Martinez five minutes after the interval. Torres and Cesar
Azpilicueta both began for Spain, and both players had chances to score.
Azpilicueta flashed a first-half chance just wide and hit the side netting
late on, while Torres tested the Bolivian keeper early on and chipped over
moments after scoring. The striker was replaced with 62 minutes played.
Andres Iniesta crashed in a late second for the World and European
champions, with Azpilicueta impressing at right-back throughout.

Torres Chelsea
Lucas Piazon scored a wonderful effort for Brazil's Under-21 side at the
Toulon tournament in the south of France as the finalists crushed Qatar
7-0.
With the young Selecao already 4-0, Piazon, who has been representing his
country for the first time in three years at the youth tournament, curled
home a beautiful left-footed shot from the edge of the box. Brazil scored
two further goals in the second half and will play hosts France in the
final on Sunday.
Both Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah played in England Under-20's
1-1 draw with Colombia that guarantees their spot in Sunday's 3rd/4th
place play-off against Portugal.
McEachran was drafted into the starting line-up by Gareth Southgate but
unfortunately limped off injured with just 19 minutes played, four minutes
after Cauley Woodrow had given England the lead.
Chalobah came off the bench with six minutes remaining and the scores
level, Colombia having equalised in the 69th minute, but the 19-year-old
helped England close out the draw which extends their stay at the
prestigious tournament. They will play Portugal on Sunday.
Charly Musonda scored twice as the Belgium Under-19 side defeated Greece
4-2 in the Elite Round of qualifying for July's European Championships in
Hungary. Musonda netted twice before Greece responded with two quicks in
quick succession, but Belgium got back in front and won by two clear goals
thanks to Siebe Schrijvers's brace. Musonda was replaced with 11 minutes
remaining. Belgium are second in their qualifying group with their destiny
in their own hands - if they beat Portugal on Monday they will qualify for
the Under-19 European Championship.

INTERNATIONALS: SALAH NETS IN EGYPT LOSS
Posted on: Sat 31 May 2014
Mohamed Salah continued his exceptional goalscoring record at
international level when he opened the scoring in Egypt's 3-2 loss to
Chile in Santiago early this morning (Saturday).
Egypt are not in the World Cup but travelled to South America to play
Chile, who are considered one of the dark horses for this summer's
showpiece in Brazil.
With 12 minutes played Salah, playing wide in a front three, latched onto
a through ball just inside the Chile half, ran clear of their high
defensive line and finished high into the roof of the net past Claudio
Bravo. It was the winger's 19th goal in just 29 appearances for his
country, and his second international strike since moving to Chelsea in
January.
Egypt then doubled their lead four minutes later through Khaled Khamar,
who also exposed Chile's high line before cutely chipping Bravo.
But, inspired by Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez, Chile fought back on home
soil. On 26 minutes Sanchez set up Marcelo Diaz, who scored with an
acrobatic volley, and then in the second half he provided a pair of
assists for Eduardo Vargas, who twice finished well to complete the
turnaround.
Egypt play Jamaica in another friendly on Wednesday at Brisbane Road, the
home of Leyton Orient, with kick-off at 8pm.

INTERNATIONALS: ATSU INVOLVED IN GHANA DEFEAT
Posted on: 31.05.2014
Christian Atsu played the first half of Ghana's 1-0 loss to fellow World
Cup hopefuls the Netherlands in Rotterdam on Saturday evening.
The winger started the game out wide in a five-man midfield, but the Dutch
were dominant throughout as the Ghanaians struggled to offer any attacking
threat.
Robin van Persie scored a fifth-minute opener but the Netherlands could
not add to that tally despite plenty of missed chances, with Arjen Robben
particularly guilty in front of goal.
Atsu, who spent last season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, was replaced by
Kevin-Prince Boateng at half-time. Michael Essien also played the first 45
minutes.
Ghana play the USA on 16 June in their first game at the World Cup. They
play one more friendly before then, against South Korea next Sunday 8 June.
