Concern growing for Cavs' defense
來源:http://0rz.tw/eu7Zt
After beating the New Jersey Nets on Feb. 9, Cavs coach Mike Brown said the way
his team played defensively, giving up better than 50 percent shooting in a
second consecutive game, concerned him a little.
After Friday's loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, it turns out that concern wasn't
misplaced and probably is growing as the Cavs prepares to face the Orlando
Magic Sunday in Amway Arena on ABC (WEWS Channel 5).
The Bobcats burned the Cavs, scoring from the inside, the outside and in
between on the way to shooting 55 percent in a 110-93 win.
''We've been doing that lately and that's the disappointing thing,'' Brown said.
The lapse at the defensive end of the court has been brewing for a while but
was masked by a 13-game winning streak before the All-Star break. In the last
two games of the streak, the Cavs gave up better than 50 percent shooting and,
in the past five, opponents are shooting a combined 51 percent.
The Cavs also have given up more than 100 points in four of those five games.
Brown can point to a major reason.
''There's no physicality in that area, defensively, at all,'' he said.
Brown
Call it supreme confidence, but the Cavs were able to reel off those 13
consecutive wins with two of their stars on the bench and with a potent
offense. It appears as if they believe they can just outscore opponents without
getting stops on the defensive end.
''It's something we need to pick up,'' LeBron James said. ''We know that.
''In order to win ballgames, in order to win a championship, we need to get
back to what we do. It's something we know and something we will do in order to
win ballgames.''
The Cavs' championship dreams are tied to getting back to playing better
defense.
''In order to be a championship-caliber team, you have to be able to grind it
out. You've got to be able to stick with it and you've got to be able to force
the issue,'' Brown said. ''And you can't rely on anything but yourself and your
team. Right now, we're not doing a good job in that area.''
Bobcats rising
Give Bobcats coach Larry Brown credit for turning the culture around in
Charlotte in a very short span. The Bobcats are no longer a laughingstock of
the NBA and are two games ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks for the eighth and final
playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
If the Cavs hold their No. 1 slot, they could be facing the Bobcats in the
opening round of the playoffs. Given that the Bobcats have won three of the
four games against the Cavs this season, that's not a pleasant prospect.
''They have multiple scorers. They run the pick-and-roll and they have guys
that can finish at the rim,'' James said when asked about his team's problems
against the Bobcats. ''They have two guys that can really finish anywhere on
the court in [Stephen] Jackson and Gerald Wallace. When you have those types of
complements on the court, it definitely hurts.''
James
