Braves envisioned Nate McLouth serving as their leadoff hitter, Troy Glaus providing power in the middle of the lineup and Yunel Escobar continuing his role as a consistent run producer. But through the first 16 games of the year, McLouth (.150), Glaus (.167) and Escobar (.203) were three of those five key members who were bordering around or below the Mendoza Line. The others with sub-.200 batting averages were Matt Diaz (.162) and Melky Cabrera (.135), a pair of outfielders who entered the season with hopes of forming an effective platoon in left field. "Maybe I have to reassess what I'm doing with each individual or not doing with each individual," Pendleton said. "There are some guys I can look at and say, "Hey [Eric] Hinske, let's go in the cage for a couple rounds of soft toss,' and he's ready to do what he's capable of doing.
