CE is less reactive, therefore it is natural for cells to store their cholesterol
in the esterified form (mainly in the lipid droplet). Free Cholesterol is prone
to oxidation and peroxidation, which are essentially toxic to the cells.
On top of that, oxysterols are also important regulators in many pathways, so
it is likely for cells to prevent unecessary oxysterol formation.
These are probably considered to be the main reasons for the esterification
of cholesterol. To support that, recent study also showed that accumulation of
free cholesterol will lead to apoptosis.
