Poethig reported a study of the location of gene no chromosome 3 of maize .
Two genes ,d (dwarf plant v D tall plant) and 1g (liguleless leaf v Lg leaf
with ligule) were know to be located on chromosome 3, 25 units apart in the
linkage map when the unit of distance is 1% recombination .
Two other mutants were used :
c1 - chlorophyll mutant giving small yellow seedlings .
C1- green seedling .
E - esterase enzyme , two forms fast and slow identified by
electrophoresis ,Ef and Es .
Four test cross (F1*homozygous recessive) progenies were reported.
1.green tall 208 , green dwarf 37 , yellow tall 48 , yellow dwarf 197 (490)
2.green slow 138 , green fast 76 , yellow slow 84 , yellow fast 125 (424)
3.green ligule 341 , green liguleless 19 , yellow ligule 17 , yellow
liguleless 288 (665)
4.tall slow 114 , tall fast 40 , dwarf slow 52 , dwarf fast 102 (308)
Determine the recombination frequency in each of the progenies .
How do the separate result show that all of these genes are located on
chromosome 3 ?
What is the arrangement of these genes in this linkage map ?
Why are these relative locations not established accurately by this study ?
Describe a crossing experiment that would determine the locations of these
four genes more accurately .
