Outlaw has seen it all as a Blazer

Outlaw has seen it all as a Blazer
When he arrived in the Trail Blazers locker room six seasons ago, Travis
Outlaw was 18 years old. And he took a locker in the same room as Bonzi
Wells, Rasheed Wallace, and Ruben Patterson, who was required by law to
register as a sex offender.
Outlaw was barely out of high school, and fresh off a senior prom, and
he said Friday, reflecting on those first few weeks as an NBA player,
that he looked around at the Blazers at times and thought, "I'm ready
to go home."
He wasn't playing. He wasn't fitting in. He was barely talking.
Outlaw was shy. His teammates gave him a hard time about it. His
interviews with reporters consisted of head shakes, and nods and lots
of "Yes, sir" and "No, sir" answers.
No, sir"
He got hazed, too. Mostly friendly stuff. Carrying luggage on trips,
paying the bill at the end of a meal and living with the threat of
getting tossed into the cold whirlpool at any given moment. And a few
times after shootarounds, Wallace punted a bunch of basketballs into
the 200-level at the Rose Garden and made the rookies retrieve them.
It's worth pointing this out today, because for all his growth in the
NBA, and for all the evolution of the Portland franchise in recent
seasons, Outlaw is now the current Blazer with the longest team tenure.
He also has never played a single minute in the playoffs.
I take that back.
Outlaw played in the Mississippi state high school championship game
six years ago, before joining the Blazers. Outlaw played for Starkville
High, which lost in overtime of the state 5A title game to Vicksburg.
He scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds, and was blanketed at different
points of the game by as many as three opponents.
( Outlaw
"We should have won the game," he said, "but I couldn't make anything
that night."
During the Blazers' push for the playoffs I often find myself thinking
about Outlaw, and about how far he's come. In part, because when he
arrived, I was sure the Blazers had the toughest locker room in the
league, maybe in sports, and it was a dicey place for a young,
impressionable kid to grow. In part, because he is the only guy on
the roster who can truly appreciate where rock bottom was for the
organization.
Said Outlaw: "I had Damon (Stoudamire) and Derek Anderson looking
after me. Dale Davis, too."
Coach Nate McMillan, who didn't arrive until two years later, learned
about this after practice Friday and said, "Those guys looked at him
and were aware of his vulnerability and saw an opportunity to help
him out. I'm glad he had those kinds of players around."
The fact that Outlaw has now been around longest is probably as much
about his development off the court as about his growth as a player.
The organization underwent a shift in philosophy during his rookie
season, began to value character in personnel decisions, and now
Outlaw's closest friend on the team is two-time All-Star Brandon Roy.
Roy is so solid, he could get elected governor if he wanted the job.
Roy
"I learned a lot during those first years," Outlaw said. "I was trying
to earn time, and I was a little lost. I've always been aware that I
am getting paid for what I do. I play basketball. That's my job."
He said these words this week, as his team closed in on a playoff berth.
Consider all that's happened with this franchise over the last six years,
and all the places fans have been on a ride that hit some low places.
And remind yourself that while you could tune out, justifiably so, Outlaw
could not.
It's why making the postseason feels so special for him.
"We're going to make the playoffs," Outlaw said. "That's not a question,
it's a statement. I've never been.
"We're going."
The coaching staff in Portland will tell you that Outlaw does anything
it asks of him. It wanted him to play better defense, and he's dedicated
himself to it. It wanted him to stop holding the ball, and instead,
either catch and shoot, or put the ball on the floor and attack. He's
done both.
Said McMillan: "He can jump over anybody. What I want is for him to get
to the free throw line more."
Outlaw lives with his older brother, John. He has an English Bulldog
named "Chubs." And when Travis is not playing basketball, the Outlaw
brothers can often be found playing the video game "NBA Live."
NBA Live"
You should know, Travis Outlaw never plays the game as his own self.
Instead, he picks another team, or another player on his team, and he
lets his brother play as Travis Outlaw, forward, Trail Blazers.
"I don't want to be selfish," Travis said. "I don't feel right if I'm
myself and I'm taking all the shots and have the ball in my hands all
the time."
McMillan smiled when he heard that.
