A student pilot aboard a single engine aircraft that crashed near a Lake Wales
airport last Wednesday morning has died.
Sheng-yen Chen, 26, of China, was hospitalized in critical condition and never
improved. He died this past weekend.
The instructor, Anthony Arzave, 32, remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The Cirrus SR20, single engine, four seat plane crashed in a marshy area next
to Lake Wales Municipal Airport at approximately 10:45 a.m.
The plane, registered to Aerosim Flight Academy Inc. of Sanford, was equipped
with an emergency parachute. It was deployed.
It remains unclear if the parachute was deployed by the pilots or deployed on
impact.
The plane crashed just short of the runway.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time by the FAA and
NTSB.
