Sources: Nomar deciding between A's and retirement
Free-agent infielder Nomar Garciaparra is choosing between retirement and a
one-year contract with the Oakland A's, major-league sources say.
The Phillies, the other team pursuing Garciaparra, are "fairly certain" that
they will not sign him, according to a source with knowledge of the club's
thinking.
The A's, meanwhile, could increase their pursuits of free-agent shortstop
Orlando Cabrera and left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes due to their
uncertainty over Garciaparra, another source said.
Garciaparra, 35, appeared in only 55 games for the Dodgers last season due to
left-calf and left-knee injuries. As of last week, he was still working out
in Boston and weighing his options.
For the A's, Garciaparra could be a right-handed alternative to Eric Chavez
at third base, Daric Barton or Jason Giambi at first and Giambi or Jack Cust
at designated hitter.
The signing of Garciaparra would not preclude the A's from signing Cabrera,
sources say. However, the team could make higher bids for both Cabrera and
Reyes if Garciaparra no longer were in the picture.
Garciaparra, a .314 lifetime hitter, has earned more than $77.4 million in
his 13-year career, according to baseball-reference.com. He and his wife,
former soccer star Mia Hamm, are the parents of twin daughters, Grace and
Ava, who turn 1 on March 27.
