Former Major League pitcher Jeriome Robertson died late Saturday night
following a motorcycle accident in his hometown of Exeter, Calif., according
to reports.
Robertson, 33, pitched parts of three seasons with the Astros and Indians. In
his rookie season with Houston, 2003, he went 15-9 with a 5.10 ERA and
finished seventh in National League Rookie of the Year voting.
Robertson, a standout at Exeter High School, lost control of his 2007 Yamaha
Warrior while making a 70-mph turn, according to the Visalia Times-Delta.
"He was such a competitor," his former high school coach, Steve Garver, told
the Times-Delta. "That was one of the lasting impressions he left. He always
said, 'You have to compete, compete, compete.' "
Selected out of high school in the 24th round of the 1995 First-Year Player
Draft by Houston, Robertson went on to appear in 51 Major League games (32 of
them starts) from 2002 to 2004, going 16-12 with a 5.71 ERA.
After his rookie year, he was traded to the Indians for Luke Scott and the
rights to Willy Taveras, and went on to make just eight appearances for
Cleveland. The Mets signed him to a Minor League contract in 2006, and he
last pitched in the independent Atlantic League and the Triple-A Mexican
League in 2007.
In 12 Minor League seasons, Robertson went 81-80 with a 4.15 ERA.
