Theo Walcott has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with Arsenal,
worth £100,000 a week.
The 23-year-old England forward, who is in the final six months of his
current deal, rejected a five-year offer worth £75,000 a week in August.
Talks stalled after Walcott turned down Arsenal's summer proposal but
progress was made in the last two weeks.
Walcott - who has recently been used as a striker - has scored 14 goals in 24
games this season.
Arsenal lawyers and the player's advisors spent all of Thursday in
negotiations before agreeing on most issues by 19:00 GMT.
The club had tabled a five-year contract worth a reported £90,000-a-week
with a signing-on bonus worth around £3m.
Walcott favoured a three-and-a-half year deal and common ground was found on
that, and also on the complex area of image rights.
Walcott's deal includes a signing-on bonus in the region of £3m.
The Southampton academy graduate was upset with manager Arsene Wenger's
decision to use him mainly as a substitute earlier in the season, but Walcott
has since regained a regular starting place.
This will bring an end to another protracted contract saga involving the
Gunners, but this time they are keeping their player.
Last summer Arsenal lost Robin van Persie to Manchester United as he entered
the last year of his deal, and in 2011 they sold Samir Nasri to Manchester
City when he was in the same situation.
Mathieu Flamini was in an identical position to Walcott in 2008, and he chose
to see out his final six months before joining AC Milan.
Arsenal also saw Cesc Fabregas move to Barcelona following lengthy
speculation, although the Spaniard had longer left on his contract.
But Walcott has instead committed his future to the team who signed him from
Southampton as a 16-year-old in 2006.
Arsenal rebuffed a bid for him from Manchester City towards the end of the
summer 2012 transfer window, while Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United
had also expressed an interest.

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Theo Walcott has signed a
new long-term contract.
The 23-year-old forward has already made 244 first team appearances since
joining Arsenal from Southampton in January 2006, during which time he has
scored 56 goals.
Walcott has also established himself as a regular England international
during his time with Arsenal. Having signed for the Club at the age of 16
from Southampton, Theo soon won a call-up to England’s 2006 World Cup squad.
Later that year, he became the country’s youngest-ever full international at
17 years and 75 days when he faced Hungary. Walcott currently has 30
international caps.
The lightning-fast forward is enjoying another good season and is currently
Arsenal’s leading goalscorer with 14 goals in all competitions. This tally
includes two hat tricks - at Reading in the 7-5 Capital One Cup victory and
also against Newcastle United in the 7-3 Premier League victory at Emirates
Stadium.
Manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are all delighted that Theo has signed a
new contract. He joined us as a 16-year-old and since then has developed very
well to become an extremely important player for both Arsenal Football Club
and England.
"Theo is a strong player and also a great person, and the combination of his
ability and pace always make him such a valuable asset either from the flanks
or down the middle. Theo’s contract extension now gives us a strong nucleus
of ambitious young players who have committed to the Club and want to be
successful with us as a group.”
Theo said: "I am very happy to have signed a new contract here at Arsenal.
Thanks to everyone for their continued support, especially the manager,
everyone at the club and most importantly the fans. I have made it clear from
the start that I wanted to stay at Arsenal so I am pleased we have agreed a
deal that everyone is happy with. What’s important now is for the team to
realise its potential and win trophies.”
Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is looking forward to Theo's continued
contribution for the Gunners in the forthcoming years.
