簡介：This presentation concerns anthropological fieldwork conducted
between 2001-03 in Tanzania and Kenya on Chinese medicine in
East Africa. I have already published an article on patients in
Tanzania in 2002, while this presentation concerns narratives
that relate the life histories of the so-called "Chinese medical
doctors" now operating in Kenya. Elaborating on Charles Stafford's
notion of "separation and reunion" as a particular trait of Chinese
ritual and social life, I suggest that these doctors live in a l
iminal state of "mobility and connectedness" (靈 ling and通 tong,
in Chinese), and suggest that this is a consequence of the global
commercialisation of health care.
