ANAHEIM -- The Angels are expected to announce the hiring Jerry
Dipoto as their general manager on Saturday. The club has not
confirmed the hiring, which was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of
FOXSports, but MLB rules prohibit teams from making major
announcements during the World Series.
Tim Mead, the Angels' P.R. director, said that the club will hold
a news conference "regarding the GM position" at noon PT on
Saturday.
A former Major League reliever, Dipoto is currently Arizona's
senior vice president of scouting and player development. After an
eight-year playing career with the Indians, Mets and Rockies that
ended in 2000, he joined Colorado's front office. He then moved
to Boston and was part of that team's front office during its
magical run to the 2004 World Series title, after which he
returned to the Rockies for a year before joining Arizona's front
office.
The Angels interviewed a range of candidates before apparently
deciding that Dipoto -- who was also interviewed by the Orioles
for their GM opening -- was the right person to replace Tony
Reagins, who resigned two days after the season following four
seasons on the job.
Among the candidates considered by the Angels were Kim Ng of Major
League Baseball, Thad Levine of the Rangers, Damon Oppenheimer
and Billy Eppler of the Yankees, former GMs Dan Evans and Omar
Minaya, and Rick Hahn of the White Sox.
Dipoto, 43, was the D-backs' point man when that team and the
Angels pulled off the Dan Haren swap last season. Arizona acquired
Joe Saunders and three pitching prospects, including southpaw
Tyler Skaggs, who is now rated the top pitching prospect in the
D-backs system and one of the best in the Majors.
The hiring of Dipoto puts a GM in place for the Angels before the
filing period for free-agent-eligible players begins next week
following the three-day window that allows clubs exclusive
negotiating rights.
The Angels haven't gone out of the organization for a significant
front-office hiring since 2003, when Eddie Bane became director of
scouting.
A native of Jersey City, N.J., who attended Toms River (N.J.) High
School, Dipoto was drafted by the Indians in the third round of
the 1989 First-Year Player Draft out of Virginia Commonwealth
University.
He made his Major League debut in 1993, with Cleveland, where he
spent two seasons before being dealt to the Mets. After two
seasons in New York, he was dealt to Colorado for Armando Reynoso,
and he spent his final four years in the Rockies' bullpen. He
went 27-24 with a 4.05 ERA in 390 career appearances, all in
relief.
After Boston's historic breakthrough in 2004, Dipoto rejoined
Colorado as director of player personnel in 2005 and moved to
Arizona a year later as vice president of player personnel. He
took over as interim GM when Josh Byrnes was dismissed. In
addition to making the Haren deal, he sent Edwin Jackson to the
White Sox for Daniel Hudson, creating payroll relief and adding
youth in both deals.
Dipoto interviewed for the Arizona GM job last fall, but the
position went to Kevin Towers. With Dipoto remaining as senior
vice president of scouting and player development, the D-backs
were one of the surprise teams of 2011, claiming the National
League West title.
Dipoto will have a handful of positions to fill in the Angels'
front office, including assistant GM and director of player
development.
His familiarity with both leagues should be a benefit in terms of
evaluating talent, building relationships and making deals.
