Yevgeny Kafelnikov waited patiently across the court from Belgian Kristof Vliegen like a parent waiting for an overactive child to finally fall asleep. XD The 29-year-old Kafelnikov, who contemplated retiring after finishing 27th in 2002 (his lowest since 1993), chuckled and shook his head as the sparky Vliegen, 21, spent the first set winking at the crowd, raising his hands in victory, and serving ace after ace at the lumbering Russian. Vliegen played paddle ball with Kafelnikov's serve in the first set, sending returns back that could have left smoke on the baseline. The lanky 6'4" Belgian won the first three games before being broken at 3-0. Kafelnikov, 6'3", finally held serve at 3-2, but couldn't contain the firepower of the younger Vliegen, who seemed to surprise even himself with a mix of gentle dropshots and searing backhands. The battling blondes stayed on serve in the second set, with Vliegen scrambling for a drop shot in the sixth game and dumping it behind a stunned Kafelnikov, only to crash into the net with momentum and lose the point. He then served up an ace to win the game. Added bonus: the love of the crowd. But Vliegen's forehand soon took on a mind of its own. When it went in, it was incredible. When it went out, it went way, way out. His mishits handed Kafelnikov the tiebreak in the second set and became an omen of what lay ahead. Kafelnikov, who has two Grand Slam titles (French Open in 1996 and Australian Open in 1999) used his baseline power to move Vliegen side to side during the final sets, wearing down the inexperienced Belgian playing in his first US Open. Vliegen's unstoppable energy soon faded and the veteran Russian capitalized on the Vliegen's 59 unforced errors to win the match 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.225.193.140
