As the superstructure, political issues are much more delicate since they are
never only between Asian countries. By claiming freedom rights of navigation,
the not-Asian-country United States has a say and complicated the territorial
disputes in the South China Sea between China and a number of Southeast Asian
countries. The North Korean missile crisis, Cross-Straight issues or the
Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan
all suggest that China Containment Policy still prevails. Meanwhile, the
US-leading TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) is now vigorously under
negotiating, causing harsh impact on ASEAN cooperation that China intended to
take control of.
