themselves autonomously. However, the nature of
'self-govemance', its actual and potential contribution
to societal governance are not (yet) fully understood.
Therefore, the article aims to explore the concept of
self-governance, so that a start can be made in understanding
self-governance and its significance in the governance of
modern society. Without the capacity for self-governance in
society, societal governance becomes an impossible task, as
the history of many totalitarian-regimes has shown: the fate
of the former East European 'People's Republics' is a clear
example.
