A chapter on the biologic aspects of sinus aug- mentation is basically a
chapter on the principles of bone regeneration. But why write this chapter
when bone regeneration is a conserved process that has close similarities at
different anatomical sites? Writing this chapter is scientifically justified
if we consider the characteristic biologic aspects of bone regeneration in
the augmented maxil- lary sinus and its clinical consequences. Hence, this
chapter is designed to translate fundamental aspects of bone biology into
clinically relevant information. It is written with the conviction that basic
bone biology provides a basis for today's clinical decisions and a road map
for designing and developing bone regeneration materials in the future.
