The right secured by the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, however, fell
considerably short of "abortion on demand." The Supreme Court
held that the right to privacy prhibited state interference with abortions
performed in the first trimemster of a woman's pregnancy. Essentially,
the new right protected the privacy of themedical decision, which was regarded
as being made jointly by the pregnant woman and her doctor.
