It is impossible define an exact moment when anthropology begins, but
anthropological ideas emerged long before the establishment of the
discipline. Crucial to the understanding of what was to come were notions

One view of the founding of anthropology is that it stems from the debate
between the polygenists and the monogenists of the early nineteenth
century. All anthropology today inherits the monogenist premise that
