The Institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing (IPAS) is seeking highly
motivated science or engineering graduates to commence their PhD studies in
the world leading research institute. This PhD project is part of a larger
research project funded by the Australian Research Council. The project will
create next-generation nanotechnology-based photonic devices by embedding
functional nanoparticles into glass materials. Nanoscale materials offer
unique properties, e.g., extremely high optical nonlinearity, broad and
intense luminescence that can be tailored via the nanocrystal size, and
enhanced rare earth upconversion emission. Via embedding these nanocrystals
into glass, the extraordinary properties of these nanocrystals can be
exploited in a bulk, macroscopic material that can be processed into optical
fibres and waveguides, which can harness the nanoscale properties in
practical devices. This new approach opens up a route to tailor the
nanotechnology to the real world. The project is also open to explore
potential applications of the novel nanomaterials and fibres in fibre
sensing, concentrated solar cells, fibre lasers and waveguides.
The successful applicants will be supervised by researchers globally
acknowledged as leaders in their areas and have access to state-of-the-art
facilities, equipment and resources. The PhD candidates will be part of a
research institute renowned for excellence, and the research projects will be
undertaken in brand-new building (officially open in July 2013 with $100
million investment). The PhD candidates will be strongly supported for
presenting their research results at national and international conferences.
As IPAS supports commercialisation, the PhD candidates will be equipped with
training, knowledge and skills needed in industries.
Successful applicants should possess a first class honours or master degree
in chemistry, materials science, physics, photonics, or engineering, coupled
with a strong desire to pursue groundbreaking research and working with the
international team at IPAS. Applicants must have, or expect to obtain, a PhD
scholarship ($25,392 in 2014). We are happy to offer top-up scholarships
valued at up to $5k p.a. on top of the scholarships provided by the Federal
Government, the University of Adelaide, or the Chinese Scholarship Council
(CSC).
Please forward you expression of interest including a CV to A/Prof. Heike
Ebendorff-Heidepriem (heike.ebendorff@adelaide.edu.au). CSC scholarship
applicants are also welcome to contact Jiangbo (Tim) Zhao
(tim.zhao@adelaide.edu.au).
