OVERVIEW
The Master's in Statistical Science (MSS) is a 2-year graduate degree program
that provides a modern, comprehensive education in statistical theory,
methods and computation. Courses and projects emphasize stochastic
model-based approaches to problems of inference and prediction, highlighting
Bayesian and machine learning methods. Students develop skills and expertise
in modeling complex and potentially massive data sets and advanced
computational methods while gaining exposure to a broad range of application
contexts. The MSS is attractive to students interested in professional
careers in industry, business and government, as well as those interested in
bridging to PhD studies in statistics and related areas.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENT
1. Coursework amounting to 36 units of graduate credit (12 or more courses)
24 graded STA credits
6 graded/non-graded STA credits
6 STA/non-STA credits.
2. Applied Statistics Experience outside of core courses
Projects, independent studies and/or internships,
and, participation in our DataFest data analysis competition.
3. Completion Exercise of presenting to the student's MSS advisory committee
Either a portfolio of work from elective coursework and applied experiences
or, a Master's thesis of original work supervised by the MSS advisory
committee.
See Coursework & Requirements for further details.
CURRICULUM AND CUSTOMIZATION
MSS students select from a rich menu of courses, applied experiences and
research projects and pursue a course of study customized to their
backgrounds, interests and goals. Most students take the majority of the
designated First Year MSS Core courses in year 1. Every student then
customizes her/his program in year 2 by selecting from Second Year Core &
Electives, with the advice and guidance of her/his advisor and other program
faculty.
The First Year MSS Core is a set of 8 recommended courses (20-22 credits) on:
Models & methods (2.5 courses), Theory (1.5), Computing (2) and Practice (2).
Topics highlight:
Modern regression; Predictive modeling;
Bayesian and classical theory and methods;
Statistical computing with R & Matlab; Large-scale & distributed computing;
Statistical consulting.
The Second Year Core & Electives is a set of courses offering a diverse range
of advanced and special topics.
Includes advanced courses specific to the STA MSS program.
Topics highlight:
Time series; Dynamic models; Spatial statistics;
Machine learning; Modern nonparametrics;
Surveys; Design of experiments; Causal inference;
ADMISSION PREREQUISITES
Statistical Science Background:
1. Two semesters of an undergraduate, calculus-based probability and
mathematical statistics sequence; One course in matrix algebra; One course in
applied regression analysis; Some basic experience with computation and data
analysis
2. Prior exposure to formal programming, using one or more of C, python, java,
R, Matlab, etc., is highly desirable
3. Exceptional students who may not have this complete list of prerequisites but
have compelling applications otherwise may be admitted but will be required
to complete additional intro-level courses
Graduate School Requirements:
All applicants must satisfy all basic requirements of the Duke Graduate
School for MS programs, including GRE and English language prereqs.
