It is one of the leading research institutes in the Middle East. The institute collaborates closely with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) through interdisciplinary research projects and student exchange programs. Dr Jimmy Peng from the Electrical Power Engineering (EPE) Program is currently looking for PhD candidates in the field of wide-area monitoring and control for power systems. The primary objective is to investigate the impact of renewable generations on the transmission security and the system stability of transmission and distribution grids. Potential research topics include 1) inter-area oscillation damping, 2) online state estimation, 3) renewable energy integration, 4) real-time stability monitoring and data mining, 5) Phasor Measurement Unit development, 6) power system communication, and 7) parallel-processing implementation. Research will be conducted using industry grade computer software. Prospective candidates should have a strong technical background in power system operation, control system design, signal-processing, and programming. Successful candidates are entitled to full scholarship for the duration of 4 years. This includes tuition fees, monthly living allowance, accommodation, health plan, and flight tickets. During the PhD degree, candidates can apply to spend up to 2 semesters at MIT.
