Dear Min-Hung, I am in the process of looking through the applications for our graduate program at UCSB. Every year, our department receives several thousand applications from best students from the top universities around the world, and this year was no exception. I alone have a stack of over 150 applications from really great students interested in working in my lab. So I have spent the past two weeks studying all the applications, and overall, your application has really stood out in my mind, based on your reference letters and research record. It seems to me that you are a strong candidate and would do well at a top university like UCSB. For this reason, I have recommended that you be admitted to UCSB. You may be getting an email about this shortly. However, I also want to speak to you over the phone (or over Skype if possible) to hear a little bit more in detail about what you want to work on. I would also like you read some of my papers on my website to see what you understand from them so that we can discuss some of the actual research going on in my lab. Could we set up a time to "meet" early next week? Please let me know what would work for you.
