ANNOUNCEMENT OF A GRADUATE STUDENT POSITION 27.9.2011
We announce a three-year graduate student position (tax-free stipend,
17 200 € annually including MYEL employment pension insurance) in the
project “Contemporary evolution of animal personalities and life-histories
in harvested freshwater systems”, funded by Emil Aaltonen foundation,
and conducted mainly at the University of Oulu, Finland. The project will
start at 2.1.2012 and last until 31.12.2014. The project aims to resolve how
important fisheries-induced selection on fish personalities and associated
life-history traits is in commercially and recreationally harvested
freshwater systems.
We will use Eurasian perch as the main model organism. We will
combine methods of behavioural ecology, fish biology, animal physiology
and theoretical ecology, and knowledge on one or more of these fields
is required. Experimental work will require periodical stays at
Kainuu Fisheries Research unit in Paltamo. The recruited PhD-student
would join the University of Oulu Graduate School, and likely join
the Biological Interactions Graduate School.
We encourage applications from the most motivated candidates interested in
fish biology and fisheries science, behavioural ecology, population genetics
and mathematical modelling. Depending on the skills and orientation of
the recruited PhD student, the dissertation can focus on any of
these disciplines. Ability to work with wild fish is required, and
good fishing skills are appreciated. Our research consortium (Dr. Anssi
Vainikka and Dr. Jukka Forsman at the University of Oulu, Dr. Pekka
Hyvärinen at the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute, Dr. Timo
Marjomäki at the University of Jyväskylä and Prof. Raine Kortet at
the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu kampus) offers
excellent supportive team for the work. We appreciate and expect hard work
when it is required, but offer freedom to take days off, when there is less
to do.
We expect the successful candidate to be fluent in English, since
the research includes international collaboration, and the scientific
reports will be written in English. We require some demonstrations
of good writing skills, and therefore hope applications of two
A4-pages where you describe in English, why you would be a suitable person
for the work, how do you think fishing could induce selection on individual
traits of fish and how fishing-induced selection could be minimized. Use
of scientific references is desired. Please send your
application together with your CV to anssi.vainikka@oulu.fi
before 01.12.2011. You can also ask a recommendation letter from one referee
to be sent separately to the e-mail address above. The best three candidates
will be interviewed.
Please ask for more information: Dr. Anssi Vainikka, tel. +358 500 443290 or
anssi.vainikka@oulu.fi.
