We are recruiting excellent and highly motivated PhD students. Currently, two
PhD student positions are available. The salary will be supported during
their PhD courses.
Project: Ubiquitination is a key regulatory step for neuronal functions,
including circuit formation, synaptogenesis, and synaptic transmission.
Ubiquitination of target molecules is mediated by 3 classes of enzymes, E1
ubiquitin activating enzymes, E2 ubiquitin conjugating enzymes, and E3
ubiquitin ligases. E3 ubiquitin ligases determine the substrate specificity
and, in some cases, the polyubiquitin chain type specificity. The research of
our team has been focused on functional analysis of HECT type E3 ligases in
the brain. We have established conditional knockout mouse lines for several
Nedd4 family HECT type ligases. Using one of these lines, we reported
recently that Nedd4-1 is a critical regulator of morphogenesis of the
dendrite (Kawabe et al., Neuron, 65, 358, 2010) and already found other
phenotypes in our mutant mouse lines. We will further characterize these
mouse lines and identifying the physiological target proteins of these E3
ligases. The ultimate goals of our projects are to understand roles of
specific ubiquitination pathways in regulation of brain function and
development.
