The Chinese national women旧 team showed their basketball superiority over
neighbours Chinese Taipei in the Opals World Challenge in Cairns on Saturday
night, winning the match 85-58.
China showed that under Australian-born coach Tom Maher they have added
consistency and offensive flair to their trademark tough defence and physical
play. They will be a team to watch as the Beijing Olympics approach.
Chen Lisha was the top scorer with 18 points, connecting with the bottom of the
net nine times from 11 attempts. She also had 10 rebounds. Ji Xiao had 17
points to be the next highest scorer for China.
Chinese Taipei were well served by a number of players. Jui-Yu Lan was top
scorer with 14 points, while Feng-Chun Chiang and Chieh-Ping Sun had 10 points
each.
China came out firing in the opening minutes of the match; Miao Lijie scoring
11 points in the opening quarter, including two from two three pointers.
China also played some tight defence, holding Chinese Taipei to only 11 points,
while scoring 23 of their own. Jui-Yu Lan had five of Chinese Taipei旧 points.
Jia Guang provided a spark for China off the bench in the second quarter,
helping her team build on their lead, and finishing the half with seven points.
China jumped to a 51-28 half time lead on the back of 45% shooting and 30
rebounds to 18.
Both teams managed to keep their fouling to a minimum, China had only four
team fouls at half time and Chinese Taipei had nine.
Chinese Taipei made a run at China in the third quarter, the team working
together to only fall behind by one more point, finishing the quarter and going
into the final break 24 points in arrears, 48-72.
Scoring for both teams dried up in the final quarter. China managed 13 points
to Chinese Taipei旧 10 as the 2005 Asian Champions, China, ran out 85-58
winners.
