What sayst thou who dost bear a secret flame,
That sickens thy heart with tormenting heat?
And when dost thou lend thy ears to its beat
That oft-times jigs like a chaste and meek dame?
O thou art of my sort! Virtue's good Lamb!
Who walkst not without counting thy timid feet,
So much with others' cares thou strivest to meet
In an invisible mirror called Fame.
So back to the dark fire dwelling in thee
That wants things to consume more than thy heart.
Harbor it not so deep in fear and smart,
But unleash it to the ruinous degree:
Let wrath sweep thy foes in a killing gust!
And let love burn thy love in unbound lust!
