A nameless beauty I saw in the night
Did softly descend and softly depart.
Her glitter tore my dull eyelids apart:
An unreal nymph broke my day-dreaming sight!
So I cast my coy eyes through obscure light
On this fair stranger, yet strangely my heart
As I sensed, flew to you with piercing smart:
O beloved Sunflower! My Muse of plight!
So I asked myself: was it truly Love?
Or was it by essence fruitless desire
Nourished by my soloistic devotion?
Thus when you are stirred by sudden vision
Of Love, mark Eros' malicious satire
That did blight my shape and my joy remove.
