Am I so wretched to want such comfort,
That was wrapped in extolment rich but vain?
The pre-emptive denial did my strong fort
Of pride undermine to ruins of pain.
Wretched am I indeed, o dear, for shame,
But more so am I for your charity
On my stance unfashionable and lame,
So I said: you've wronged me with your pity.
Yet do not believe my deceptive plot;
I lied to save my pride's last residue.
Your female acumen misunderstood not
The secret fire of my heart toward you.
So I thank you for quenching my fool's light.
