The approaches considered in the preceding
section have a natural generalization toward
an improved approximation. The mean field approach
leads naturally to the Bethe approximation
(Bethe, 1935; Rushbrooke, 1938),
which treats the interaction of a given spin
with its nearest neighbors somewhat more accurately.
