Masks should not be worn by healthy people to protect themselves from acquiring
respiratory infection; there is no evidence that wearing masks prevents healthy
people from getting sick and masks can be in short supply and unavailable for pe
ople who need them during outbreaks of respiratory infection

When Should a Mask Be Used?
Face masks should be used only by individuals who have symptoms of respiratory i
nfection such as coughing, sneezing, or, in some cases, fever. Face masks should
also be worn by health care workers, by individuals who are taking care of or a
re in close contact with people who have respiratory infections, or otherwise as
directed by a doctor.
