ADOLESCENTS.
A key developmental milestone for adolescents is gaining autonomy from their
parents or caretakers (see Part XII). Pediatricians can support this autonomy
by structuring the patient interaction to include time spent with the patient
alone without the parent. This practice affords the adolescent a sense of
privacy and increases the chance of gaining insight into issues that would
not be discussed in front of parents. Confidentiality, and the limits
thereof, should be discussed with both the patient and the parent together,
before the parent leaves the room. Not all practitioners ask parents to leave
the room during health maintenance visits, although adolescents value this
time and such interactions enhance the quality of information obtained and
care provided. Physical examinations of adolescents should also be conducted
without the parents present, unless the patient requests otherwise.
