【研究倫理專題演講】

演講題目：The Ethics of Speaking Up

演講摘要：
In this presentation, I discuss the ethical problem of speaking up and how it
is related to integrity. To begin, I give examples of cases in which people
have to decide whether to speak up. I try to avoid sensational cases of
whistle-blowing, and to focus attention on more common cases related to
research integrity, clinical practice, and professional life. Then I discuss
whether people have a duty to speak up. I focus on five salient features: the
harm to others, the cost to self, the effectiveness of speaking up, the
nature of the judgment, and the person’s role in the case. But I don’t
focus exclusively on the duty of individual people. I also consider social
practices and cultural changes that would encourage people to speak up. To
conclude, I discuss three ethical ideals that might guide social and cultural
change.
