Fat singer
A German-American opera singer who won the hearts of the entre nation
during hermany concert tours of United States
was Ernestine Schumann-Heink(1961~1936).
Blessed with an extraordinary contralto voice,
the singer's repertoire included 150 roles,
and her singing was enhanced by her marvelous acting ability,
a trait not usually found in opera stars of her day,
no matter how beautiful their voice are.
What most endeared Schumann-Heink to the American public,
however, was her great warmth and humanity.
Haughty was the last word anyone world associate with this wonderful lady.
Always famished after an exhausting performance
at New York's Metropolitan Opera House,
Schumann-Heink often sought haven in a favorite nearby restaurant where
she would consume a huge meal.
One evening after the opera,
Schumann-Heink was seated at her table in the restaurant with
an enormous steak in front of her when Enrico Caruso entered.
Looking horrified, the famous tenor said in mock astonishment,
"But Ernestine, you're not going to eat that steak alone?"
"Oh, no ,"giggled the portly contralto, "I'm having potatoes with it."
