Stevi Jackson gained her BA in Sociology from the University of
Kent in 1972 and her Masters from the University of York in 1973,
after which she returned to Kent to pursue doctoral research on
young women and sexuality. She has retained her interest in
sexuality throughout her career, but has also worked on broader
aspects of feminist theory, on family relationships and on
childhood. In recent years she has begun to develop collaborative
relationships with Asian scholars and an interest in comparative
work on gender, sexuality and social change.
══ ★ ．════════ ※ 演講簡介 ═════════════
This paper is based on my recent co-authored book, Theorizing
Sexuality (Open University Press 2010) in which we argue for
recovering the radical insights of the pragmatist/interactionist
tradition and to establish its continued relevance to a distinctively
sociological and feminist analysis of sexuality. The interactionist
approach to sexuality, pioneered by John Gagnon and William Simon,
was the first to offer a fully social understanding of sexuality,
but was subsequently eclipsed by Foucauldian and queer approaches
- yet it has distinct advantages for both feminist and sociological
analysis. As I will argue in this paper, this approach is enables
us to take account of multiple facets of social life, addresses the
actualities of everyday social practices, is flexible enough to
encompass cultural differences and social change and is therefore
ideally suited to grappling with the complexities of contemporary
sexual life in global late modernity.
