1.供給與儲存能量(stored form of energy)
2.細胞膜的重要成分(components of membrane)
3.絕緣作用,如:神經鞘脂質(insulation,eg:sphingolipids)
4.酵素的輔因子,如:維他命K(enzyme cofactor,eg:Vit. K)
5.乳化劑,如:膽鹽(emulsifying agents)
6.荷爾蒙,如:維他命D,固醇(hormones,eg:Vit. D,sterols)
7.胞內訊息因子(intracellular messengers,eg:phosphatidylinositol)
8.攜帶電子(electron carriers)
9.光吸收色素(light absorbing pigments)
phosphatidylinositol是荷爾蒙Group2的secondary messenger之一
