Yao Ming's form looked good.

He squared up,
flicked his wrist and followed through with the pure-form release on a shot
we have seen thousands of times in the nine years since the Rockets drafted
him No. 1.

OK, so it was with a toy basketball on a 4-foot goal and the defender was the
lovable Clutch,
the Rockets mascot, at an appearance Thursday at Hunters Creek Elementary
School.
It was still nice to see.

Yao's words weren't so encouraging.
The oft-injured big man has never sounded so unsure about his ability to
recover from an injury.
He didn't sound disheartened, but he was hesitant to make proclamations about
his basketball future.
對於喜愛他的球迷來說, 他的發言或許不是那麼令人樂觀.
姚明的態度從來沒有如此的不確定, 他不知道自己是否能夠從傷癒中付出.

That is discouraging news.
Not just for Rockets fans or the team, but more importantly, for Yao.

Yao is a proud player who works as hard as anyone in the sport, but his body
has failed him.
He didn't fail it. That body has taken its toll on his mind.
With previous injuries, Yao always had been confident he would return.
He has always spoken in an upbeat tone about his hard work in rehab
and the reports from his doctors about his status.
That isn't the case this time.
姚明是一個認真出了名的球員, 但是他的身體卻令人失望.
他的肉體無法搭配上他堅強的意志.
之前的傷病他總是確信自己能夠回到場上,
但這次不一樣了.
Mental toll

As anyone who has gone through a strenuous physical rehab from an injury
could tell you,
there are usually ups and downs in recovery,
and the process involves good days and bad that often lead to uncertainty.
So perhaps we caught Yao on a bad day.
任何人在經過這種重大的傷病時, 心情總會起起伏伏.
漫長的復健期會影響你的心情. 有時候你能夠保持樂觀, 有時候卻會令你失去希望.
或許姚明最近只是心情不好罷了.
There was a long pause after I asked him if this rehab was more difficult
than others.

"I'm not a doctor, but I have some experience,"
Yao said with his customary good humor and a slight chuckle before turning
serious.
"This one is … the more injuries you get, experience may help you, but also
it terrifies you. (It takes) mental toughness.
"我不是醫生, 不過我已經很有經驗了." 姚明用他的幽默感與笑聲來回答.
"這次嘛... 你受了越多傷你就會越有經驗. 但是同樣會讓你的內心越來越害怕.

"You get a little bit tired about this rehab.
Basically my job is to play basketball instead of going to rehab every day."

He has done much more of the latter than the former in recent years.
We haven't seen Yao in a Rockets uniform in over six months,
and he has played in only five games since suffering a stress fracture in his
foot in May 2009.
比起以前的傷病, 這一次的姚明奮鬥了更多.
已經有半年的時間我們沒看到他穿上球衣.

Physical pounding

Surgery in June of that year to reshape his foot was supposed to relieve him
of that recurring issue.
Before it could be determined how well that worked,
he suffered a stress fracture of the medial malleolus in his left ankle
at the beginning of last season, which led to another season-ending surgery.
那一年六月的手術原本是預期能夠解決姚明身上的老毛病.

Thursday, Yao appeared to move gingerly,
but at 7-6 and 310 pounds he is wise to be careful with any step he takes
around
a group of children staring in awe at the tallest man any of them had seen.
Though now that he is a father (his daughter, Amy, was born a year ago)
he might be more comfortable around the little ones.

He is packing a few extra pounds these days, but that isn't a surprise,
because his latest rehab from surgery has him limited to light jogging.

He said X-rays "showed great news" at a Wednesday checkup,
indicating his body is healing properly and on schedule.

The desire to win, to deliver on the promise he so often showed when he was
healthy,
is what keeps Yao coming back.
Inside the school, Yao stood next to a life-sized poster of Hakeem Olajuwon
holding one of the Larry O'Brien trophies he helped the Rockets claim in the
mid-1990s.

But the free-agent-to-be knows less about his basketball future than at any
point
since he was a teenager in China and unsure
if he would be allowed to come to the United States to play in the NBA.

Shrinking window

Yao, 30, said he "might" know in August or September if he will ever play in
the NBA again.
He wants to. And he wants to play here. He just doesn't know if his body will
enable him.
"It's too early to say still," he said. "The experience I have (tells me to
keep) doing what I am supposed to do every day.
"You never know what will happen tomorrow."
三十歲的姚明, 說了自己或許在八月九月的時候能夠給個答案.
他想要繼續在休士頓打球, 只是擔心他的身體能不能撐得住.
"現在要回答還太早了."姚明說.
"我現在能做的就是復健, 我沒辦法預料將來會發生甚麼事情."
