Striker completes switch to Burnley
Sam Vokes has this evening completed a move to Burnley for an undisclosed
fee, putting pen to paper on a three-year contract.
After passing his medical and agreeing terms, the Welsh international striker
immediately joined up with the Clarets squad who are playing at Bath City in
a friendly game tonight.
The 22-year-old joined Wolves from Bournemouth shortly after the conclusion
of the 2007/08 campaign signing a four year contract.
Capped 21 times for Wales, Vokes had found his opportunities at Wolves
limited after making an impressive start to life at Molineux, coming off the
bench to notch an equaliser on the opening day of the season at Plymouth and
producing a late brace in the 3-1 at Charlton in September, 2008.
Although used mainly as a substitute during his debut season (32 times in the
league to four starts), Vokes still managed to plunder eight goals in all
competitions.
He spent three months on loan at Leeds at the end of 2009, the first of a
number of loan moves. However, at the end of the campaign, he put pen to
paper on a 12-month extension at Molineux.
At the start of the 2010/11 season he departed on loan to Bristol City, and
then Sheffield United and Norwich. Last season, he spent time with Burnley
and Brighton, and has now made the move to the Clarets on a permanent basis.
“Sam came to us as a young player and made an important contribution during
the Championship winning season,” said CEO Jez Moxey.
“Since then he has found opportunities hard to come by at Wolves which has
seen him embark on several loan spells elsewhere.
“But throughout his time with us he has been a model professional, never
causing a moment’s trouble behind the scenes and carrying himself with a
smile on his face.
“When players behave in this way we are usually more sympathetic to their
individual circumstances.
“Sam needs to play regularly to help develop his undoubted talents and he
was not guaranteed that here.
“We are pleased to have concluded a deal with Burnley which suits all
parties, and wish Sam all the very best for the future.”
