From : http://www.venuswilliams.com Venus returns to the Olympics this summer, in Athens Greece, marking her second consecutive summer Olympic games. Her first trip to the summer games was in Sydney, Australia in 2000. Venus, at the time, was seeded #2. Despite her seed, Venus was the heavy favorite to capture the Gold Medal as she was the reigning Wimbledon and US Open champion. In fact, she was in the middle of her 35 match win streak. Venus opened her quest against Henrieta Nagyova, of Slovak by cruising to a 6-2 6-2 win, as she moved a step closer to the Gold. In the second round, Venus again won easily handing Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn a 6-2 6-3 loss. It was in the second round that #1 seed (and defending Champion) Lindsay Davenport withdrew with an injury. The third round, saw yet another routine victory for Venus. Upending Germany's Jana Kandarr 6-2 6-2, moved Venus into the quarter finals. The quarter final showdown was a match that everyone was excited about. Venus was set to face Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario from Spain. Being in the midst of her 35 match win streak, the last loss Venus had suffered was in the quarter finals of the French Open...to Sanchez-Vicario. Sanchez-Vicario put up a solid fight, but Venus used all her confidence to pull out a 3-6 6-2 6-4 win. The semi finals would determine which two players would fight for Gold and which two players would fight for Bronze. Venus faced fellow American Monica Seles in the semis. She cruised to a 6-1 4-2 lead, before Seles came back using her powerful two fisted groundstokes and taking four games in a row to win the second set. Venus regrouped in the third set and advanced to the finals 6-1 4-6 6-3. Seles would go on to defeat Jelena Dokic for the Bronze medal. In the finals, Venus faced Russian Elena Dementieva. Dementieva had scored a huge win over her at the 1999 Fed Cup so she went into the match very confidently. But Venus was far too strong, and won her sixth straight title of 2000, posing a 6-2 6-4 victory and winning her first Gold medal. But it didn't end there. Teaming up with sister, Serena, Venus became only the second woman ever to win Gold in singles and doubles. In the finals, the sisters overwhelmed the Belgian team of Kristie Boogert and Miriam Oremans 6-1 6-1. Venus and Serena will attempt to defend their doubles Gold, and both will complete in singles in 2004. Road to Gold Singles 1st Round- def. Nagyova 6-2 6-2 2nd Round- def.
