Vince Carter works on fitting in, improving his shot with Magic

ORLANDO — The Orlando Magic, a tight-knit group last season en route to the
NBA Finals, will try defending their Eastern Conference crown by fitting in
another All-Star-caliber player, Vince Carter.

So far so good, even as Carter works to improve his shooting, going 23-for-57
from the field (40%) and 7-for-28 from three-point range (25%) in four
preseason games. He seemed to find the range better in Tuesday's 121-86 win
at the New Orleans Hornets, with three three-pointers among his 18 points.

Carter told the Orlando Sentinel after Sunday's practice that "I criticize
myself for my shooting more than anybody does. I'm trying to take a different

Carter, teammates believe, more than fills the void created when the Magic

"Vince is a better scorer, to me," All-Star forward Rashard Lewis said.
"We're still running the same offense; Vince is just playing that role that

Carter, 32, has career averages of 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists,

Carter, who grew up 55 miles from Orlando in Daytona Beach, said he has found
the best situation of his career after a six-year stint with the Toronto

"I feel pretty good (with Orlando). I have not played my best game, in my
