On Wednesday, when Boozer committed to the Bulls, it appeared that the Utah would lose one of their most valuable assets for nothing in return. On Thursday, however, the Jazz swung a sign-and-trade agreement with the Bulls that netted them a significant trade exception. In the deal, the Jazz will give Chicago a protected second round draft pick. The trade exception will give Utah the amount of Boozer’s salary with the Bulls during his first year, plus $100,000. Boozer’s salary next season is expected to be in the range of $13 million. The Jazz have one calender year to use the exception. Utah General Manager Kevin O’Connor said Thursday that the hunt for a new player is expected to start immediately. “It gives us the opportunity to start investigating other rosters to see if somebody might interest us,” O’Connor said. “The key is for us to remain competitive. We want to get somebody that will keep us competitive, but we also don’t want to take somebody that another team doesn’t want.” This is the third major trade exception the Jazz have been able to secure in the last eight months. Early last season, Utah received a $6.5 million exception in the deal that sent Matt Harpring - — now retired — to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Later in the season, the Jazz received $2.7 million in the deal that sent Ronnie Brewer to the Memphis Grizzlies. Utah can’t combine the exceptions.
