Fanatik狂熱報將BJK射手Daniel Pancu列為第一季 …

Maldarasanu and Lucescu factor
Look at the precedent here. Striker Daniel Pancu was almost unknown outside
Romania when Lucescu insisted on signing him, also from Rapid, during the
summer. Yet he has been such a success that sports daily Fanatik rated him
its star player of the Super League season's first half. If Maldarasanu can
make a similar impact Besiktas is going to be a formidable force during the
second half.

Once again this past week the sports pages have been dominated by soccer
transfer news with a number of important deals going down. We have covered
all those which have been confirmed, but one to which we have perhaps given
less attention than it deserves is the move of Rapid Bucharest midfielder
Marius Maldarasanu to Besiktas. There is a good reason for that.
A number of the other transfers have involved players we know well, or about
whom there is plenty of information easily available. Maldarasanu is a
different case.
We know almost nothing about him at all. Rapid has achieved little in the
international arena while he has been there and although he is 28 he has
only recently established himself as a member of a Romanian national squad
which has hardly been setting the world on fire itself.
But one thing we can say. Besiktas coach Mircea Lucescu knows his Romanians.
That may seem a statement of the obvious since Lucescu is Romanian himself,
but if you look at the record of his predecessor Christoph Daum, you'll find
his signings of German players for Besiktas were less than 100 percent
successful to put it at its most charitable.
Maldarasanu made his Besiktas debut in the victorious friendly against Sparta
Prague on Sunday. He gave a solid if somewhat unexciting performance and
generally received high marks from the wathcing media. Afterwards Lucescu
said that he still needs time to settle in Istanbul and will improve.
Lucescu has an eye not only for Romanians but for others as well. Sebastien
Perez, Carlos Alberto Capone and Andres Fleurquin, to name but three, were
hardly huge names when he brought them to Galatasaray yet all did a solid
job there when called on.
All were dismissed by Lucescu's Galatasaray successor Fatih Terim and the
men Terim used to replace them have mostly been conspicuous by their failure.
Sergen
It remains to be seen how Lucescu plans to reshuffle his midfield to
accommodate Maldarasanu. Again we have to mention that one man who might now
be out of favor with the coach is Sergen Yalcin.
Sergen asked to be excused from traveling to the squad's Antalya training
camp because of an Achilles tendon injury. Lucescu allowed him to stay away
but the move infuriated team manager Sinan Engin.
In a move we have not previously reported, Engin announced publicly that
payment of match fees owing to Sergen would be withheld because of his
behavior, though it is not clear that he has the authority to enforce such a
measure.
His statement, in turn, got Sergen's dander up. He protested angrily that his
reasons for not traveling to Antalya were perfectly valid and that if Engin
had a problem with him, he should have thrashed it out face to face without
running to the press.
This is a touch laughable coming from Sergen who has a record of
poorly-judged comments to the media himself. But on this occasion he's right
. Engin should not have gone public in criticizing a player he had not
previously spoken to about the affair.
With this business rumbling away in the background, Besiktas is not
presenting quite the happy family image it had a month ago.
Revivo
Ironically the training camp Sergen chose to skip was aborted because of
foul weather in the Antalya region last week and the team returned to
Istanbul in short order. Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor are back home too,
but others are still in Antalya, including Galatasaray.
It has been playing friendly matches almost every day and the latest was on
Tuesday against Bulgarian Division One team Lokomotiv Plovdiv. After the
embarrassment it suffered against Krilya Sovetov on Sunday, it restored some
faith by recording a 3-0 win. New Israeli signing Haim Revivo got down to
business with 2 of the goals, the first just before half time.
He and Berkant Goktan added the others late in the game. This has already
been interpreted as meaning that Revivo is back from the wilderness of poor
form into which he disappeared before leaving Fenerbahce. But we have to
wait. This was a friendly match, Lokomotiv is hardly a world class side
and we will know more when Galatasaray resumes its Super League campaign.

Rapid Bukres,
