2020 NBA Mock Draft 10.0: Final projections before Nov. 18 draft

Minnesota Timberwolves: LaMelo Ball, G, Illawarra Hawks
Stats: 12 G, 31.2 mpg | 17 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 6.8 apg, 1.7 spg | 37.7% FG, 25% 3P,
72.3% FT
Measurements: 6-7, 181 lbs
Ball’s feel for the game is unteachable, his combination of handle and
passing creativity at his size transcendent, and his red flags -- mainly,
shot quality and defensive engagement -- are mostly coachable. He’s the
highest-upside prospect available, and in this class, that’s all you can ask
for.
Is he a tidy fit with the Timberwolves’ current core of D’Angelo Russell
and Karl-Anthony Towns? Not particularly. He and Russell both profile as
ball-dominant lead guards, and defense might be considered optional for the
trio. But the offensive intrigue is undeniable and from Minnesota’s
position, talent should trump all.
There is also, of course, the possibility the Timberwolves view Anthony
Edwards as being a tidier fit and having greater star potential. Or they
could move the pick. On the latest Bulls Talk Podcast, Minnesota Star Tribune
Timberwolves writer Chris Hine predicted Edwards at No. 1.
Such are the questions that will need answering when the clock strikes 6:30
p.m. CT on Wednesday. But standing pat and exiting the draft with Ball would
be a solid outcome for the rebuilding Wolves.

The Ringer’s 2020 NBA Draft Guide. 11.17
https://reurl.cc/d5o7Gk
ANTHONY EDWARDS
Guard, Georgia, freshman
Bruising scorer who can create space with his dribble and make tough shots
from all over the court, but his decision-making leaves much to be desired.
SHADES OF: Victor Oladipo, Eric Gordon, Dion Waiters
PLUSE
Powerful driving to the rim; when he initiates contact, defenders bounce off
him. Finishes with athleticism and displays soft touch with either hand.
Dynamic shot-maker off the dribble; he fluidly transitions from complex
dribbles, spins, and hesitations into pull-ups, stepbacks, and side steps.
A freight train in transition; though his shot selection was iffy at Georgia,
wide-open spacing in the NBA could lead to far more shots at the rim.
Solid passer. Doesn’t possess elite court vision, and tends to react rather
than create opportunities for teammates, but he can execute basic reads to
shooters and cutters.
Potentially a super-versatile defender thanks to his rare blend of size,
strength, and agility.
MINUSES
Not a pure shooter; he settles for jumpers even against mismatches, which is
especially frustrating for a player with his size and strength.
Best suited to be in a multiple-ball-handler system next to a pass-first
player because of his underwhelming playmaking instincts.
Inconsistent effort. At times he plays hard by cutting, running up the floor,
and crashing the boards. But then he’ll disappear—teams will need to do
extensive background to gauge his mentality.
Despite his athleticism, he struggles as an off-ball defender, lacking focus
and often losing track of his man.
Fundamentals and effort must improve while defending on-ball; lockdown
flashes are mired by far too many moments of apathy.

1. Minnesota Timberwolves
James Wiseman
Wiseman’s season was cut short first by the NCAA and then by Wiseman himself
who followed advice that he was a sure fire top 5 pick (or close), and opted
to end his season early. While it would have been nice to see him compete and
develop, following the injury to Charles Bassey and the fact that bigmen seem
to be the most injury prone of any position, it is difficult to criticize the
decision. particularly on the heels of the NCAA’s shenanigans. So much for
teaching Wiseman a lesson. Wiseman showed surprising skill in the few games
that he played, knocking down a few fadeaways and looking competent on the
offensive end. But there is still skepticism about just how much offense he’
ll bring on a nightly basis at the next level. He developed a bit of a
reputation in high school for not having a genuine passion and love for the
game. Considering he played so few games at Memphis, that remains a question
mark. He’s clearly a specimen type of bigman, drawing comparisons to Dwight
Howard and DeAndre Jordan, and is clearly capable of being a difference maker
on the defensive end at the next level.
Why the Timberwolves take James Wiseman: We are projecting this pick to be
traded to Charlotte. The pick is actively being shopped with Charlotte
showing the most interest. Minnesota is said to, “have no interest in making
the first pick”. The Hornets are enamored with Wiseman’s ability to be a
rim protector as well as his freakish run/jump athleticism for a center. He
has even showed some promise as a mid-range shooter, so it’s not as if he’s
a stiff. He just happens to be entering the league in an era where most
centers are diminished to being glorified role players, similar to running
backs in the NFL. The big question for Wiseman is how well he can defend the
perimeter and whether he will be a match up problem in today’s NBA and be
relegated to the bench along with 90% of true centers in close playoff games.
Wiseman surely would benefit from landing in a nurturing environment.
NBA Comparison:: Hassan Whiteside
