Nalbandian dumped in second round
Wednesday 21 January 2009
By Katy Ghassemi
Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu has shocked world No. 11 David Nalbandian In
the second round of Australian Open 2009, ousting the 10th seed 6-4 5-7 4-6
6-4 6-2 on Wednesday.
Nalbandian, a semifinalist in 2006, was a favourite to take out the match,
having defeated Lu in their only previous meeting in 2004. Lu’s fitness was
also of concern given he pulled out of the Hopman Cup earlier in the month
with a quad injury.
However, there were no signs of the injury as Lu made light work of the first
set, taking it in 42 minutes before Nalbandian came back to secure the next
two 7-5 6-4.
Looking to level the match, Lu created a break point opportunity in the first
game of the fourth set, but Nalbandian fought back, winning the game with an
ace. Undeterred, Lu continued applying pressure to Nalbandian’s serve and
succeeded in breaking the Argentine twice en route to winning the set 6-4
with an ace.
With the match underway for well over three hours, the decider became a test
of endurance. Continuing to play aggressively, a still-energised Lu ran away
to a 5-2 lead before Nalbandian, in a last-ditch effort, had the opportunity
to break Lu’s serve to stay in the match. The Argentine was unable to
capitalise on six break point chances, and Lu secured the match on his first
attempt.
Lu, by making it to the third round of a major for the first time in his
career, will play Spaniard Tommy Robredo in his next match. Robredo won his
second-round assignment with Serbia’s Victor Troicki earlier in the day at a
canter, galloping to a 6-1 6-3 6-0 victory.
Quick facts
Nalbandian had eight double faults to Lu’s four
Lu hit 51 winners to Nalbandian’s 37
Lu’s first serve percentage was 63 per cent compared to Nalbandian’s
50 percent
Nalbandian had 61 unforced errors, while Lu tallied 60
