TAIPEI, Taiwan: China may have 800 missiles pointed at Taiwan, but when
the two sides met Friday for Davis Cup tennis action, it was all sport
and no politics.
儘管中國可能有八百枚飛彈正對準著台灣，當兩岸在星期五的Davis Cup對戰時，

The Chinese players were warmly received by the crowd of about 700, and
politely applauded for their many well executed shots — a far cry from
the partisan atmosphere that often sets a rancorous tone at Davis Cup
matches.

The Taiwanese civility appeared to be at odds with the tension that
often pervades the relationship between Beijing and Taipei.

China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949, and since then the
communist colossus has repeatedly threatened to attack if democratic
Taiwan makes its de facto independence permanent.

While trade and sporting contacts between the two have mushroomed
since the early 1990s, the Chinese threats of military action —
and the independence leaning policies of the current Taiwanese

Taiwan Strait into one of the world's perennial hot spots.

Apparently concerned that pro-independence activists might try to use
Friday's tennis competition to make a bold political statement,
Taipei police kept a riot cruiser conspicuously parked outside
the arena's entrance.

But it might just as well have stayed in the garage.

Inside the building, the atmosphere was so restrained that a casual
observer might well have thought he'd ventured into a Buddhist
monastery rather than an international sports competition.

Only a handful of partisans — seated in the arena's upper deck and
colorfully attired in matching yellow T-shirts — encouraged the
Taiwanese players with rhythmic chants and cheers.

But even they denied there was any political component to their enthusiasm.

fortyish-looking woman with a bright engaging smile and mobile, vigilant
eyes. "It's not about politics. We're only here for the sport."

That view was echoed by honorary Taiwanese team leader Lee Yuan-tseh —
the 1986 Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry — who said that Friday's
match could have been between Taiwan and any other country — that
China wasn't a factor.
台灣隊的榮譽隊長、1986年的諾貝爾化學獎得主李遠哲的話也正好與她呼應，他說，
星期五的比賽，台灣隊不管對上哪個國家都一樣，對手是中國無關緊要。
"I don't think there's any particular political element to this
competition," he said.

Down on the court Taiwanese No. 1 Lu Yen-hsun — ranked 80 in the world —
used a blistering display of pinpoint ground strokes to turn back a spirited
challenge from China's Sun Peng — ranked 720.
Lu prevailed 3-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In the second of Friday's two singles matches Taiwan's Wang Yeu-tzuoo
was taking on Yu Xinyuan.
