1. The Upper Paleolithic Revolution
主要講歐洲4萬年前藝術創新的興起，以及和周邊國家包括非洲等的關係。先談upper
Paleolithic時期的藝術改革，後面談到在非洲有發現更早的artifacts，後面提到澳洲、
亞洲等地，最後因氣候等原因都匯集到歐洲。

2. Attempts at Determining Earth's Age
根據好幾個測算方法：測fossil record、岩石、測海水的鹽度等。
第一，根據化石的演化率來測定，但這個方法有問題：演化率不穩定，同時化石也會受損
。
第二，根據地層厚度，但是地層經常受到侵蝕。
第三，測海水鹽度，由Hally提出，然後由另一名科學家驗證。但不知道海水每年循環，
同時沉積在海底的鹽分也不準確。不過很多科學家喜歡這個理論，因為根據這個方法得出
的數據和他們自己研究所需的地球年齡相符。

3. Two Kinds of Lizards
兩種lizard，一種是sit-and-wait，第二種是active lizar，是一篇對比的文章。
sit-and-wait比較少活動，active 喜歡吃a concentration 的動物。
sit-and-wait可以根據環境改變顏色，active有long tail，若predator抓住它會捨棄
tail逃走。
最後一段說lizard身體裡的一種化學物質，說sit-and-wait體內的某物會讓它很容易
exhaust，所以它不能活動太久。但是active體內另一種就maintain比較久。

1. 女學生想換專業
女學生想從數學系換到biology，教授建議不要，因為如果要換的話可能會延畢（有題，
教授態度：他覺得轉系可能會遇到潛在問題）。
女生：是啊，所以想問有沒有summer program，可以暑假先修課
advisor：有，但deadline已經過了。
女生：我知道（有題），所以想看看有沒有別的課
advisor：可以到York Institude Tech工學院修summer program，優點：涉及三方面內容
，marine等（有題，為什麼提這個？答：教授推薦）可以修兩門，但還要再修一門才能畢
業，建議選擇老師進行獨立研究，但今年summer教授出國都不在學校，妳恐怕得另找
supervisor，乾脆明年再選吧。
女學生說可以等一年，明年再找教授（有題，問女學生打算幹嘛）。
最後又說道學生之前數學專業的一個分給錯了，修改需要時間，可能影響申請summer
program，可以請數學教授寫一封信聲明。
2. 莎士比亞圓形劇場
有記錄說這個劇場是圓的，也有說是八邊形，因為是木頭的，不能折成圓形。
有一個專家記錄是圓的，因為在他的記錄中，其他資料都是對的。還有一個人的記錄比較
有問題，因為他沒有去看過那個劇場。
3. 天文學，constellation有些名字由神話而來，有些不是
星座的命名方式，一開始有些星座的命名是來自於神話，比如XX星座，後來天文學家命名
時考慮到location，希望名字能體現location。
到了1920，IAU (international astronomy union)規範了命名的規則，然後說了Big
dipper（給了北斗七星的圖）不能算星座，只能歸到星群（asterism）。professor就這
個問題發表了一通評述，後來說這個BD七顆還是蠻重要的，他是一個星座的一部分對於
navigation很重要。
4. 男學生想參加club的trip，但他不是成員
教授的問男的最近在幹什麼？男的說是寫論文和part-time job。拍了一堆rock照片。教
授就問，我有一個研究項目，能不能把照片給我用。我的雖然很多，但是我也不嫌多，越
多越好，男的同意了。然後學生的問教授能不能也幫我一個忙（aid）：我知道你在攀登
club是一個什麼委員。我聽說你要去一個地方攀岩，能不能也讓我去。有三個理由…教授
說：你以前不是會員嗎？上個學期semester沒參加沒繳會費，你的資格就被取消了（有題
，資格為什麼被取消），所以再去交錢。男的說，能不能想想辦法，女的說：沒辦法，然
後又說：有了，你可以去做嚮導guide，這樣就不會收費了還可以順便賺錢，但是得自己
訂自己的房間。男的最後表示感謝。
後面有一道題：教授和學生有什麼have something in common。
5. 動物偽裝自己的方法
動物的保護色 Uniform/mottled/disruptive 三種模式，不同情況適用不同模式，分別介
紹。
6. 兒童文學
對於兒童文學的定義一開始很混亂，曾經有本9歲孩子寫的書也被當成了是兒童文學，後
來就定義，寫給小孩子看的書才叫children literature。
JL 著名的教育家有兩個觀點：（1）兒童需要shape character這個和Aristotle 觀點一
致（有題）；（2）兒童應該快樂學習，不要memory rules，但他不贊成童話，認為童話
不是好的兒童文學，因為背景老是在dark forest，讓小朋友有不好的聯想，對他們有
negative effects（有題）。後來有另一個人提出了觀點，認為兒童小時候接受的教育越
好，長大了賺的錢越多（有題）。

4. bidirection
The passage introduces a principle, bidirectional, which means that the
communication between children and parents are two-way. In the lecture, the
professor explains this with an example of a six-month old boy. When he
smiles to his parents, his parents will smile back. When he babbles, his
parents will talk to him more. This interaction has great influence in his
future. For example, the child will be encouraged to seek more physical
contact, and communication.

study group, or to go to a presentation by his favorite author. Two
solutions:
a) go to the presentation and study on his own, emailing the group when
questions arise.
b). go to the study group and read the presentation, which is to be
publicized online by the university.

There are two ways and the professor makes two examples. The first is that
the insects use pheromones to locate.
a) Take the bees for example, some bees go far away from their hive to find
food. The bees stay at hive release the pheromone into the air to let the
bees working outside to find the way to go home.
B) Another function of the pheromone is some insects use them to tell other
insects they want to mate. Take the moth for example, the female moths by
releasing the pheromones into the air tells males they want to mate. So the
male moths find them to mate by following the pheromone.

Prescribed burning
閱讀：人類主動燒林子Prescribed burns不好。
（1）燒死動物，毀了nests，很多動物正是繁殖季節。
（2）pollute environment. Release greenhouse gas. Increase global warning.
（3）你主動燒林子也沒用，因為該發生火災還是要發生，而且還浪費納稅人的錢payment
。燒林子payment，到時候發生natural fire還得payment，要花雙份錢。
聽力：反對
（1）你可以在certain time燒呀，誰叫你天天燒來著。挑動物不在繁殖季節燒，nests就
沒事了。而且fire很慢，動物有時間run。
（2）污染都被森林給absorb，那點兒煙不是問題。
（3）你不主動燒，到時候lighting來了，把林子裏的remains給點著了，就慘了。
