The Journal of American-East Asian Relations在邀稿:
The Journal of American-East Asian Relations invites submissions for the
Frank Gibney Award for an essay in the field of American–East Asian
relations written by a graduate or undergraduate student and submitted
by his or her instructor. The winning essay will be published in the
Journal.
The first winner of the Award was Tristan Grunow, University of Oregon,
whose advisor was Jeffrey Hanes, for “A Reexamination of the ‘Shock of
Hiroshima’: The Japanese Bomb Projects and the Surrender Decision,”
published in Vol. 12: 3-4. Grunow argues that the failure of their own
bomb project a few years earlier contributed to the Japanese
government’s misunderstanding of the reality of the American atomic
bomb. For a limited time, the essay is available in a downloadable PDF
file at the Journal’s website:

The Award honors the life goals of Frank Gibney (1924–2006). Gibney
worked in both East Asia and in the United States for more than fifty
years to educate the peoples of the Pacific Basin about each other. He
began his study of Japan as a military intelligence officer during World
War II and the Occupation of Japan, and then became a correspondent and
editor at Time, Life, and Newsweek magazines. He joined Encyclopaedia
Britannica in 1966 and developed its Asian presence. He wrote or edited
fourteen books and retired as President of the Pacific Basin Institute,
which he founded, and Professor of Politics at Pomona College,
Claremont, California.
Deadline for submissions is August 31, 2010.
