While Ma’a Nonu may not suit up for the Blues this weekend, he has donned their training colours for the first time, with the former Hurricanes centre admitting "it was weird wearing blue". Nonu is now in Auckland, but is hardly settled as he hasn’t blinked essentially since the 2011 Super Rugby season began. That campaign saw him register his 110th Super Rugby cap, but was informed he was not required by the Hurricanes which saw him transfer to the Blues on a two-year deal. That arrangement also came with a sabbatical clause, but one that coincided with what would be most All Blacks off-season and well deserved break, as Nonu headed to Japan after wrapping up a whirlwind three-day tour with a haka on parliament steps. While it wouldn’t have been past Nonu to suggest he play this weekend, in good shape after 12 matches since winning the World Cup; not only is their adjustment to the team, there is settling in a new city, not to mention the benefit a week or two’s break will give the 66-test All Black. The adjustment to Auckland is something that one cannot take for granted, with Nonu admitting last week it was strange watching from the Eden Park seats as part of the ‘home team’, saying that travelling to the stadium gave him a similar feeling in the past when travelling to Westpac Trust with the Hurricanes. Nonu did also suggest he hit a wall in December, fitting into a rugby environment in Japan and a foreign country shocking the All Black who hadn’t probably emotionally settled after breaking a 24-year World Cup drought. However fitness and motivation have remained, with the game in Japan faster according to Nonu, although one suspects he will need to get used to increased physicality in Super Rugby as compared to the Top League. Nonu will travel to South Africa, where the Blues will play the Bulls and Stormers on consecutive weeks, and the 29-year-old will likely make his 111th Super Rugby appearance and debut showing for the Blues in the Republic.
